GLACIER MOUNTAINEERING COURSE

This course covers the basics of glacier travel and crevasse rescue. We will spend our time camped on the side of Mt Shuksan practicing skills on the glacier. This course also includes a summit attempt of one of the most beautiful peaks in Washington!

The Sulfide route is the perfect introduction to glacier mountaineering.

​

All guides are AMGA Certified Alpine Guides.

Climb length

Our glacier mountaineering courses are usually 5 days to include a summit of Mt Shuksan. We can also set up just the skills portion, which would be a 3 day course. Private climbs can be adjusted to be longer or shorter depending on experience and skill.

​Prerequisite

Ability to carry a 50lb backpack​

Ability to hike for 10 hours, including short breaks, with a day pack

Some backpacking experience recommended

  • How to carry and use an ice axe

  • How to use crampons

  • How to self arrest a fall on snow

  • How to travel on a glacier rope team

  • How to pack for a glacier climb

  • Knots necessary for crevasse rescue

  • Hitches necessary for crevasse rescue

  • How to build snow anchors

  • How to navigate on a glacier

  • How to camp on snow

  • Crevasse rescue, if weather and conditions allow, we will practice in a real crevasse

INCLUSIONS

  • Instruction and guiding from an AMGA certified Alpine Guide

  • Climbing Permits

  • Use of group technical equipment such as ropes​

  • A summit attempt of Mt Baker

  • Crevasse rescue practice

EXCLUSIONS

  • Personal Climbing Equipment (harness, helmet, mountaineering boots, ice axe, crampons etc). We have some available to rent or borrow. 

  • Camping gear. We have tents available to borrow if you don't have your own. 

  • Transportation to and from Mt Baker

  • Lodging or Camping before and after course

  • Food while on the trip

  • Trip Insurance
